Common reptiles such as slow worms, grass snakes, adders and common lizards are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 from death and injury, whilst the habitats of both the sand lizard and smooth snake are protected by additional legislation.
A licence from DEFRA is required when dealing with the sand lizard and smooth snake but the remaining more common species can be disturbed or handled without a licence.
However, it is common practice for Planning Authorities to consult Natural England regarding all proposed translocation schemes and it is recommended to liaise closely with the relevant local office when preparing such a scheme.
We are able to undertake all aspects of reptile survey including visual investigation, artificial refugia surveys, population analysis, assessment of receptor habitat and translocation of required.
